New Phantom Galleries exhibit by Mariana Barnes, PhD

Mariana Barnes, PhD, Dragon, acrylic on canvas, 60" x 48"

Mariana Barnes is currently on view in the lobby of 28 North First Street with five large canvases from her Mosaic series. The inspiration for these paintings comes from the art of ancient civilizations combined with everyday patterns, explains Mariana.

Mariana is a self taught artist and has been painting for the last 20 years. As a scientist/engineer, my time is divided between my art and my work in aerospace. Being an artist makes me a better scientist and vice versa. Each pursuit feeds the other -art keeps me sane, science keeps me grounded. says Maria.

Originally from Argentina, Mariana has been exposed to a sophisticated Latin American culture, where art and music are highly regarded and are a normal part of everyday life. All of the color and energy of my Latin American background nourish the paintings I create.

The exhibit is on view Monday thru Fridays 9-5pm thru the end of March, 2008.

Djerassi Fellowship Residencies Application

The Djerassi Resident Artists Program invites Santa Clara County-based and San Mateo County-based artists working in the primary disciplines of the visual arts, new media/new genre, literature, choreography and music composition to apply for two Residency Fellowships for the 2009 residency season. Made possible in part by a grant from the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, each Fellowship is comprised of a one-month residency at the Program's SMIP Ranch in rural Woodside and a $1500 unrestricted stipend.

Due to the Program's recent grant award for these two geographically specific Fellowships, the postmark deadline to submit applications for these Fellowships only is March 15, 2009. All other artists applying for the 2009 residency season must comply with the established February 15, 2009 postmark deadline. Application guidelines and forms are available at www.djerassi.org
.
All artists' applications, including those qualifying for the Fellowships, will be reviewed together in the spring.

The Djerassi Resident Artists Program core residency season in 2009 runs from mid-March through mid-November. The Program covers all direct expenses of an artist's one-month residency, including studio space, housing, all meals, administrative and technical support, local transportation and many personal amenities. Each year, drawn from an applicant pool of 600 artists worldwide, 60 artists who meet a high standard of excellence are awarded a coveted Djerassi residency. Artists are selected through rigorous review by discipline-specific panels made up of professional artists and arts administrators.

Now in its 29th year, the Djerassi Resident Artists Program is internationally recognized as one the eminent residency programs in the United States. Since its founding, the Program has welcomed more than 1,700 artists from around the world to its rural ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and is open to local, national, and international artists of all disciplines and career levels. The mission of the Djerassi Program, which is a nonprofit organization, is "to support and enhance the creativity of artists by providing uninterrupted time for work, reflection, and collegial interaction in a setting of great natural beauty, and to preserve the land upon which the Program is situated."

For more information about the residency program, go to www.djerassi.org or telephone (650) 747-1250.

First Friday February 1st at KALEID gallery

KALEID gallery enters its second year with over 60 artists and featured exhibits by Cindy Stokes and Wendy Lowengrub.

Artists' reception: Feb. 1, 2008, 7pm -9pm. Featuring Isoscelles a classic jazz paino trio with definite leanings toward Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock et alia, playing new and vintage standards.

Exhibit on view through Feb. 22, 2008

Abstract painter Wendy Lowengrub and photographer Cindy Stokes provides complimentary views of form and pattern of nature through their respective mediums.

BurnII-Stokes_Kaleid.jpg
Cindy Stokes, Burn II, Dynamic Form series, gelatin silver print, 2007. Dynamic Form book will also be available.

The black-and-white photographs in Dynamic Form reflect my visual attraction to pattern and form in both natural and manmade materials. This interest is intensified by some knowledge of the underlying physics and biology from my engineering and science background. Why naturally occurring structures so often wind up visually alluring remains a mystery. Some forms are clearly functional and display principles of efficiency, while others seem purely serendipitous, although that idea may simply reflect my lack of understanding. Emergent patterns reveal fortuitous combinations of geometry and chance; paradoxically, very similar patterns occur on widely differing scales and arise from surprisingly different phenomena. The forms seem universal while the media are irrelevant, left to our imagination. ~Cindy Stokes

Glaciology%20Series_KaleidFeature.jpg

The Glaciology exhibit is a series of paintings inspired by a trip to the Souther Patagonian Ice Fields in Chile and Argentina. Deep glacial crevasses and the undersides of icebergs that calve off glaciers reveal ice that is a beautiful, surreal and indescribably blue. This ice may be hundreds, if not thousands, of years old. The ice absorbs all the colors of the visible spectrum with the exception of blue, which it transmits. These paintings are about the search for this color and form. ~Wendy Lowengrub
