Art on the Square July 18 & 19 in Redwood City

If you missed it in June, Art on the Square is back on July 18th & 19th from 5pm-8:30pm. Bay Area artists and artisans will exhibit their work in the heart of the beautifully renovated downtown. Redwood City is an epicenter for the arts with new galleries (including Phantom Galleries!) and great places to hear live music.

Presented by the Redwood City Civic Cultural Commission and the Redwood City Redevelopment Agency, the four juried outdoor shows complement Music on the Square, the city’s popular Friday evening summer concert series. ( July 18 with the Madison Blues Band and all day Saturday July 19 with the PAL Blues Festival, www.palbluesfestival.com)

See painting, sculpture, photography, glass, fiber, jewelry, ceramics and more by fantastic local artists. And, at each show there will be a drawing for gift certificates that can be "spent" in any artist's booth.

AfterWorks this Friday the Fourth

AfterWorks begins after the fireworks subside at 10pm this Friday the Fourth. Featuring: the music of David Knight and Benjamin Henderson; Live Animation by M dot Strange set to the music of Panthelion, David Knight and Steve Barry; Live Painting by Brittany Rediger and Joe Barajas; Hooping by Rachel Radness.

CA Lawyers for the Arts Survey request

California Lawyers for the Arts is conducting a statewide survey of individuals involved in the Arts to determine interest in e-learning as an option to expand access to educational programming statewide.

California Lawyers for the Arts seeks to develop greater awareness and involvement by the legal community to the needs and interests of artists and arts organizations; and provides educational programs and legal services, such as Legal Referral and Arts Arbitration and Mediation, to the arts community.

Currently, educational programs are in-person events hosted in the Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and Sacramento metropolitan areas that seek to assist artist and arts organizations gain greater competency in handling their legal and business affairs by providing means of appropriate self-help though preventative education about best practices, rights and obligations; through the launch of an e-learning pilot program, C.L.A. hopes to reach artists and art organization in regions of California not currently supported by existing educational programs.

Renegade Craft Fair this weekend in SF

A crazy collection of 200 DIYers are selling their wares this weekend in San Francisco at the Fort Mason Center, and it's free! The Renegade Craft Fair hosts events in NYC, Chicago and San Francisco.

San Jose's own TAIKO on SPARK this week

SPARK is a great weekly program that airs art, performance and culture segments each week on KQED. We're looking forward to this week's episode which features San Jose TAIKO, and Victor Cartagena, an artist that we became familiar with through MACLA years ago.

The episode will air several times over the next few days so check listings here.

Btw....if you want to see TAIKO for real, they'll be performing at the Obon Festival in Japantown this weekend, 4:30pm on July 12th and 3:30pm on July 13th.

works/san josé "re:group" call for art

works/san josé, your community art and performance center on south first street, is reopening with its traditional member exhibition that is open to all artists.

if you have contributed since the last member exhibit in summer 07 then you are likely paid up. otherwise please rejoin at temporarily reduced rates, or contribute a bit more if you can. works currently has only volunteer staffing, so please also consider contacting gallery@workssanjose.org to help with receiving, hanging, and gallery sitting.

Avenue1 in need of Fine Artist Instructor

Avenue1 is seeking a strong Fine Artist Instructor in our Fine Art Foundations program. This is a contractor position and only requires 3 hours of instruction per class. Classes are typically held once a week in the evenings or weekends for an entire quarter. The painting class will be for the Fall of 2008.

We are looking for instructors with a strong portfolio, in putting together still lifes, as well as acrylic and mixed media painting. Being able to set a up strong still life and create strong portfolio projects a must.

We are looking for instructors with Fine Arts degrees. Bachelor’s degree strongly suggested but can be overlooked with a strong portfolio and experience. Please send resumes and portfolios to info@avenue-1.com

Art Peace: Darfur Awareness Sat. July 26th

The event July 26th is a day long concert and a celebration of artistic expression and peace. There will be a gallery full of peace inspiring art, and an outdoor presentation of the winners of the "Art Of Politics 2008" National Graphic Design Contest. There will also be interactive teach-ins about the situation in Darfur via Camp Darfur, an organization dedicated to ending genocide.

The art ark, an art living space with it's own gallery and outdoor amphitheater area, will be transformed into a festival, where people can write letters to congress, check out visual art, live painting, participate in art, and listen to some really great bay area bands and solo artists all day long.

At dusk, there will be a presentation of the documentary on Darfur called, "They Turned Our Desert Into Fire," under the open sky and a conversation with the film maker Mark Brecke, along with perspectives delivered by refugees from Sudan.

Entry is by donation, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. All donations will go to help refugees from Darfur.

Walls of Ashes at OmniCircus August 15th

Frank Garvey (pictured above) participated in Phantom Galleries during the subZERO Festival last June with paintings and beggar robot. Frank is about to unveil his Wall of Ashes installation at his OmniCircus space in San Francisco and you're invited!

Grand Opening Celebration for the WALL OF ASHES Installation! Join Frank Garvey plus other OmniCircus collaborators Friday August 15 at 7pm at OmniCircus.

Over 20 years in the making, Frank Garvey's WALL of ASHES is finally open for public viewing!

Garvey will discuss his surreal anthem to the urban night- a multimedia installation with paintings, sculptures, robots, music, photography, and video.

This installation will be open to the public most Saturday afternoons 12noon - 4pm, with special evening events TBA. OmniCircus DVDs, CDs and publications will be available for sale.
