Corpus Callosum _ help kickstart their new album

UPDATE: Congratulations to Corpus Callosum! Their new album was 100% funded!

If you've ever seen Corpus Callosum at KALEID Gallery, Anno Domini, Barefoot Coffee, or on a street corner in downtown San Jose on a summer's night, you know this band has the heart of true artists. They've given their time and talents for the love of performing to all of us here in San Jose and they're currently raising money to complete their upcoming album. They are 67% of the way there, together we can help them go all the way.

Please visit their Kickstarter page and view the video and if you like what you see and hear, pitch in a few bucks and know that you made it happen!

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1800285815/corpus-callosum

Corpus Callosum is an effort to create dynamic, finely crafted songs, both heady and theatrical, using do-it-yourself means. The band credits influence from American roots music, gamelan, early industrial and noise and western classical. They draw upon the sounds of Neutral Milk Hotel, The Velvet Underground, Tom Waits and Einstürzende Neubauten, among others, to generate a unique soundscape.

Songwriters Avery Burke and Dax Tran-Caffee collaborate with musicians Stevie Hryciw, Zach Michels, Qarly Canant, Andrea Craver, and Jason Samaha. This ensemble composes songs using traditional instruments such as accordion, reed organ, banjo, glockenspiel, mandolin and guitar; more obscure instruments like the singing saw, theremin, wash bucket bass and glass goblets and common objects such as pots and pans, pickaxes, children's toys, a kitchen blender and sheet metal. As much performance art as music, a Corpus Callosum concert showcases an array of puppetry, stilt-walking, kinetic sculpture, and other uncanny imagery to complement and embellish the sound.

Kate Saturday, Kurtis Rykovich April Feature Exhibitions

The featured exhibitions at KALEID Gallery showcases the work of Kate Saturday and Kurtis Rykovich. The two solo exhibits are on view now through April 30th.

Kurtis Rykovich WANDA
Kurtis' exhibit is a tribute to his mother Wanda that passed away due to breast cancer. The wall text quotes his mother's thoughts and challenges suffered during her illness. His painting technique is flawless with a fine attention to detail. There is hope and determination in the faces of the young women he paints and will reward those that spend some quality time with each painting.

Kate Saturday Speaking Line
Kate is a multi-talented artist accomplished both as a visual artist but also as a musician (she is a member of DeatHat). This particular series is focused on her distinctive drawing style which incorporates her sense of humor and love of comics and graphic novels. Kate will be moving to Minneapolis later this summer so now is a good time to experience her work in an intimate setting.

Special Poetry Month Event at Art Object Gallery April 24th

Poetry Center San Jose & ArtObjectGallery present

A Special Poetry Month Event: Daniel Polikof discusses Rodin’s influence on the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke

Rilke is considered one of the most significant poets in the German language. His haunting images focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety: themes that position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist poets.

Rodin taught him the value of objective observation, and under this influence Rilke dramatically transformed his poetic style from the subjective and sometimes incantatory language of his earlier work into something quite new in European literature.

On April 24th Daniel Polikof will start the evening with a bit of biographical background to place Rilke's relation to Rodin in the larger context of Rilke's life and developing work. Then he will discuss Rodin's influence on Rilke and interweave a reading of some of Rilke's New Poems which include some of his most famous pieces, such as the Panther and the Archaic Torso of Apollo (both of which will be his own translation) with a discussion of how Rilke assimilated the Rodin's sculptural aesthetic to his poetry and how this revolutionized Rilke's writing. There will be good bit of time for questions.

Delicious Show Work Inspired by Food & Drink at STUDIO Gallery in San Francisco

Reception: Sunday, May 9th, 2-6 pm
Show runs from May 5th - June 6th 2010

The Bay Area's twin passions, Food and Art, come together in Delicious, our annual show of work inspired by food and drink. This year's show--our sixth!--is bigger and better than ever: over 100 local artists bring their talents to the party. There's something for every appetite: lovely views of farms and Wine Country vineyards, terrific still lifes, scenes of local eateries and bars, plus a bit of retro flair. Each year there are themes that emerge: this year there's a lot of red, a lot of smaller, affordable pieces, fewer vegetables and more junk food. But if pressed, we would have to dub 2010 The Year of Bacon: the show has a number of witty depictions of that favorite cured meat product.

Lacey Bryant at Cactus Gallery L.A.

k,k, p by Lacey Bryant

KALEID Gallery artist Lacey Bryant has a series of new watercolor paintings at the Los Angeles Cactus Gallery.

I love painting. I am constantly thinking about painting. I find myself laying awake at night, ideas running through my mind. Sometimes I paint just to get it out of my head. I love chaos. I love things that don't make sense. Things that are theatrical, and things that are subtle, like someone walking in the rain, deliberately walking through the puddles instead of around them, huge trees growing out of 4th floor windows, girls fearlessly crushing spiders with their bare hands. - Lacey Bryant

The State Of Things exhibit by Chelsea Lynn Jennings

THE STATE OF THINGS is a multi-media installation by Chelsea Lynn Jennings that deals with the sociological idea of the "McDonaldization" of society.

McDonaldization is a theory by George Ritzer that expands upon Max Weber's thoughts on bureaucratization and rationality. In essence, the theory explains how more and more sectors of society are becoming "rationalized," or more and more like bureaucracies. Businesses do this in order to become more efficient, calculable, productive, and controlled, and it is indeed very rational from the business owner's perspective. However the increased rationalization of society leads to a very uniform world, in which both employees and consumers alike are dehumanized. This rationalization and resulting dehumanization is what "The State of Things" is addressing.
