art by Murphy Adams

see here: an exhibition of mixed media paintings, sculpture, clay and mosaic. See here, it’s about the things your think about but never say, what your actions say and not your words, it’s about what you said but wish you hadn’t. See here, a look inside, outside of your senses.

art by Charis DeRemer

Photographer Abe Menor at Empire Seven Studios

If you came out to the SubZERO Festival last Friday and came across the Street Swag Photo Booth you probably met and had your portrait taken by photographer Abe Menor.

His exhibition at Empire 7 this Friday is an excellent opportunity to see Abe's larger body of daily street journalism photos.

Abraham Menor Amidst the Hype

Meet this talented photographer in person and enjoy an evening of amazing work, music, food, friends and famiy.

Opening Reception: June 11 from 8pm-midnight
Music hyped by THATGIRL

Abraham Menor is a community organizer/worker and photographer based in San Jose, California. Menor graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University at Hayward. When he is not working as a “at-risk” youth case manager, he is armed with his camera, ready to capture the next fleeting moment. His love for the camera began in the late 90’s. His subject matter was initially graffiti. Menor sought to document the culture surrounding such an art form. Shortly thereafter, he developed a passion to document his daily interactions with people, places, and things. Menor’s goal is to tell stories using his camera.

With a background in sociology and a love for photography, Menor realized that he can combine the two together. The result is photography that analyzes and examines human social behavior and society. In the past, he has documented various social and political movements such as the anti-war movement, the Filipino World War II Veterans Equity Movement, the Silence the Violence Day, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Train March. Menor also documents Hip Hop culture and the different sub-culture of the streets. These two cultures have greatly influenced the manner in which Menor captures and documents an image. As a participant and observer, Menor is able to capture moments that are fresh and raw yet honest and real.

Show duration: June 11-30, 2010

Michelle Waters Auto-Manic group exhibition

KALEID Gallery artist Michelle Waters is a selected participant in the upcoming group exhibit Auto-Manic curated by Peter Foucault.

Michelle is donating all funds from art sales for the next couple of months to International Bird Rescue & Research Center (http://www.ibrrc.org). The foremost experts in saving oiled wildlife and are currently in the Gulf cleaning birds. (They’ve been around since the 70’s and are the people who did bird rescue during and after the Cosco Busan spill; more recently they saved 400 brown pelicans in Southern California last winter.) Visit Michelle's website for available works (http://www.michellewatersart.com/) or purchase her works in person at KALEID Gallery.

Root Division presents Auto-Manic
Ever since the first interstate highways began carving a path through the urban landscape in the early 50s, California has been the epitome of American car culture. Nostalgic images of the warm summer sun reflecting off the chrome bullets on the ached tail fin of a steel behemoth have given way to technologically savvy hybrids that can tear up a track at 0-60 mph in less than four seconds, and are nearing 130 miles per gallon.

From Thunderbirds to Teslas, the freeways, side streets, beaches and parking lots of California have always been clogged to the saturation point with automobiles. These everyday objects have deeply imbedded themselves into the collective unconscious of artists working within this urban environment, and created a fertile trajectory for exploring the relationship between man and four wheeled machine.

At our current vantage point, within a deep and crippling economic recession, with CO2 emissions reaching an alarming level and gas prices teetering on the preposterous at times, we must re-evaluate our relationship with the beloved car. With the devastating fall of the big American Car Companies and the disappearance of such iconic brands as Pontiac, a dramatic new relationship is evolving between producer and consumer, pragmatist and dreamer.

As we speed off into a new era of travel, technology and environmental responsibility, the thirteen artists in Auto-Manic, from California and beyond, respond to the role of the automobile, and its alternatives, in art.

TWO BUCK TUESDAY, June 15th 2010 6:30-9pm

$2 Art Sale and Quirky Speaker Series

This month at Two Buck Tuesday- a range of people who spend more time than you do with animals. In that sentence I'm counting "found objects" as an animal. ~this month's curator Kate Stewart

David Mejia was born and raised in San Jose, California and he loves to draw and make comic books. He works at the Martin Luther King Library and occasionally has the job of the library's mascot Conroy the Curious Cougar. David has created most of the art work for the library featuring Conroy (he also proposed to his wife in the Cougar suit.) You can see David's art work on view at KALEID Gallery.

Stephanie Bailey is a stiltwalker, ballet dancer, puppeteer and flautist. She travels the world as a museum photographer. Last summer, she spent two months at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington DC photographing their insects and prehistoric vegetation (she was also allowed to touch dinosaur bones!) Stephanie will demonstrate the process she uses to photograph tiny things, and show off the bugs the Smithsonian let her keep.

Zack Belanger will demonstrate his found object sculpting throughout the evening. "I consider myself a process artist, a materialist, and a futurist. I believe in intention and the ability to give and object a voice, a life, or a story. I ask my work questions and allow the process to show me the answers, my task is to perfect my ability to let go when necessary."

Sandy Sanjurjo talks about Seaskin, her upcoming KALEID feature exhibit benefiting the world's oceans.

Live drawing featuring Ashley Laidlaw and Justin Devine, Keith Bunnell throwing ceramics, and Arturo Rangel on the mic!

TWO BUCK Tuesdays is an all day $2 art sale and evening quirky speaker series that happens on the 3rd Tuesday of the month.

Michael Gustavson at Black Bean Ceramic Art Center

Black Bean Ceramic Art Center presents: Raku Ceramic Canvases by Michael Gustavson

Michael’s work is very unique in that he uses the traditional process of raku and has expanded it by way of his own technique. The glazes he uses are textural and often appeal to ones senses causing the viewers to immediately want to touch the work. This comes as no surprise to Michael as he always emphasizes surface quality and texture.

The wall pieces are glaze paintings with fragmented edges giving it both negative and positive space. The vessels are thrown on the wheel and then hand stretched to create a sense of the human figure. Each vessel gives the appearance of a torso having no head but having the grace of a dancer…truly these works of art are exciting to touch, look at, and admire!

Exhibit on view through June 19, 2010

Michael Gustavson graduated from San Jose State University with a Master of Fine Arts in 1980. Since then he has been a professional artist. His works of art have been collected throughout the world. You will find his art pieces in major corporations such as; IBM, Kaiser Permanent, Seagate, Cranbrook University, Eastman Kodak, McDonald Corporation, and SAS Headquarters. On an individual level, private collectors from the west coast to the east coast have collected Michael’s work over the years, many returning to obtain new works.

Erin Goodwin-Guerrero at Triton Museum of Art

EGGG%20e-announcement.jpg

Caught Between Heaven and Earth by Erin Goodwin-Guerrero at Triton Museum of Art June 19-September 19, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, June 18th, 7-9pm

from Triton Museum's website:
The art of Erin Goodwin-Guerrero is the product of a curious and questioning mind, a restless hand, and the need to be heard, as much as seen. Most of her painting is loaded with content that is accessible to the patient viewer. The recent work is charged with aggressive color, yet the complex symbolism and layers of related imagery require attention and reflection to extract bits of sensible information. Over the years, a number of themes recur in her art: boxing as a metaphor for struggle of the underdog, death as an eternal actor in human drama, the sexual/sensual undercurrent of most human ritual, the search for and abuse of the truth. The current work revisits many of these themes with myth-making narratives and guest appearances by legendary figures from art and cultural history.

Museum Hours:
Tuesday - Wednesday: 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

My Favorite Nightmares Call for Art

Nightmares. As creepy or repulsive as they may be, they fascinate us. They linger in our minds long after we've woken, leaving us distracted by thoughts of otherworldly fears. It is often the strange things that play in our heads at night that inspire us to create upon waking. Sometimes these unsettling dreams are rearranged from the events of our daily lives; our brains putting them into a senseless order, helping us to see our thoughts from an inside out perspective. Other dreams seem to make no sense at all and yet perhaps it is this “otherness” that causes us to dwell, at times giving rise to an almost a manic need to recreate the scenes that dance across our sleeping eyes, if only to have some relief once the images have been transferred to the canvas.

When we celebrate the bizarre terrors which overtake us in our sleep we are able to see what base fears we share. This will be a show of real and imagined nightmares, monsters, things that go bump in the night or cause us to gasp awake. The reoccurring night terrors that we just can't get enough of. An admission that we kind of like to be scared.

My Favorite Nightmares will be a group show featuring artwork inspired by nightmares. There will be an interactive element, including a space for guests to draw or write descriptions of nightmares they have had that have stayed with them.

showcasing artists, visions & techniques not seen at the Pacific Art League. the artwork is here to inspire & invigorate; to introduce other art cultures from the Bay Area to Palo Alto; and finally, to challenge us as viewers.

complimenting PAL's Main Gallery show, Out of the Box, we found art to personally show what out of the box meant to us, hence :redux.

No South FIRST FRIDAY July 2nd

Just a reminder that there is no South FIRST FRIDAYS art walk in July due to the Fourth of July holiday.

We will resume First Friday August 6th with the art walk and STREET MRKT in the SoFA District.

In the meantime, most galleries & art venues are open with regular gallery hours so feel free to visit, there's still plenty of exhibitions and programming happening!

Canvas Ghost Call for Art

Canvas Ghost is looking for artists to exhibit in their Day of the Dead art celebration that will take place October 16 & 17, 2010.

-This is a juried show. We are looking for local artists that have or can create their interpretation of The Day of the Dead. 2D and 3D artwork will be considered.
-Artists that are accepted are expected to attend the event. We are charging a 20% commission on works sold, so please factor that into your prices.
-We are looking for your interpretation of the Day of the Dead. We do not require any specific style or medium. The width of a 2D piece must be 36” or less. The height must not exceed 72”.
-The 2D art must be prewired as we are using a hanging system that utilizes wire on the artwork. We will reject any pieces that are not properly wired. See Examples

Please fill out the submission form here, and email jpgs of the pieces submitted.

Please email info@canvasghost.com with questions.

Whip that website into shape!
