Still Life With Banquet. Fundraiser for Zero1

Part Feast. Part Art. Part You.
Only at the 2010 01SJ Biennial.

This epicurean feast prepared by renown chef Kitty Greenwald is paired with stunning projections by filmmaker and new media artist Grahame Weinbren

What: an epicurean feast paired with stunning projections that together explore food’s shifting identity
Where: San Jose City Hall Rotunda
When: Tuesday, September 14@ 8pm-11pm; includes unveiling of Rockwell LAB’s City Hall installation.
Tickets: $304.00 (Purchase tickets here: http://01sj.org/2010/events/slwb/ )

Still Life with Banquet investigates the contradictions present in 17th and 18th Century Dutch still-life paintings by translating them into a contemporary context.

Adorning the walls of the houses of the bourgeoisie, for whom these wondrous goods had recently become available?through the development of colonies and expansion of international trade?Dutch still lives illustrated the fruits of global commerce comfortably removed from the exploitation that fueled the Dutch Republic's phenomenal rise to prosperity.

On September 14, 2010, a cross section of people will gather in an unusual urban location for a seasonal menu created using pristine, iconographic ingredients. The dishes will nod to the Dutch cookery of the Golden Age, the setting's culinary history, and the chef’s improvisations.

Accompanying the meal will be super high-resolution projections?modeled after these still lives?using the meal’s ingredients and table decorations. During the consumption of each course, the diners are surrounded by images of its ingredients naturally returning to the soil in an ecological process of decomposition, while at the same time the flowers and plants decorating the tables emerge in a natural process of growth, replacing the now decayed, decomposed and moldy foodstuffs.

Gary Coleman up and down the South Bay

Gary Coleman has found a way of increasing his studio space; put the art somewhere else.

He currently has 15 pieces in the Mountain View Tied House, 5 at the Mistral Restaurant in Redwood Shores, 8 at the Olio Restaurant in Campbell, 12 at the Stone Griffin Gallery in Campbell and 4 at the Los Gatos Museum's Art Gallery, not to mention 15 pieces in a bridge club in Palo Alto. Good news, bad news: Using time to put art out limits the time to fill the studio with new work.

Gary is showing both his landscapes and abstracts.

Albert Almondia exhibit at Soula Power Yoga

Figures: Wandering in Wonder

The selection of work included in this exhibit includes paintings of figures in various states of mood and expression. Completed over the last four years, the works are also a sample of Almondia's first years creating art. "I hadn’t realized a lot of my work is figurative. It wasn’t until installing the artwork for this exhibit that I realized they were all figurative and mostly female." says Albert about his current exhibit at Soula Power Yoga.

Themes of seduction, romance, elegance, heart-break, mystery, happiness, and simultaneously, inequality and solidarity are presented. "Probably because I’m a man I’ve been asked why so many women as subjects in my art? The answer lies within the work itself."

Almondia was born and raised in San Jose, CA. Selected past exhibits include KALEID Gallery, Eclectix Gallery (formerly in El Cerrito) and USF School of Law's Creative Justice Art Show a fundraiser to support a domestic violence program in San Francisco, CA. This is Almondia's first solo exhibit.

Find your Muse at TWO BUCK Tuesday July 20th

Find Your Muse at the Eclectic & Quirky TWO BUCK Tuesday this Tuesday, July 20th, 7-10pm.

A bodypainter creates timely work about our relationship to oceans, A production company stays in San Jose instead of moving to LA, A performer dances for peace, and a local professor rediscovers artistic inspiration at KALEID Gallery’s monthly Two Buck Tuesday event.

TWO BUCK Tuesdays is an inspired event hosted by a crew of very dedicated artists at KALEID Gallery on the Third Tuesday of the month. Artists and audience alike are invited to attend, contribute and share in this unique event all free of charge.

The Two Buck Tuesday Crew organizes artistic, creative speakers, live demos, performances and live music jammed into three hours for a hyper shot of inspiration that you'll carry with you all month long until the next one.

“One thing all these speakers and performers have in common is passion and inspiration. They’ve all found their muse and want to share it,” says July curator Trina Merry.

On July 20th from 7-10pm the public can see and speak with many amazing artists, performers and musicians and purchase $2 art (starting at noon.)

The speaker series has garnered a cult following. Similar to the idea of TED Talks, each speaker gets 10 minutes (or less) to speak and answer questions.

This month’s speaker series line-up includes:

SeaSkin.jpg

Sandy Sanjurjo will do a walk-through talk about her feature “SeaSkin” Exhibition at KALEID Gallery.

“SeaSkin was born from the notion that we are, as humans, directly connected with our environment. We are a part of the air we breathe, the earth we derive nourishment from and tread on, the water we play in and consume,” says Sanjuro.

“Initially we wanted to donate to Oceana for their 'Save the Sharks' project, but of course, with the devastation in the gulf it only makes sense for the money to go towards the clean-up effort. We will leave it in Oceana's capable hands to determine where they can best use the funds. The message of this show rings even more true now, that we are physically connected with the health of our planet, and this terrible oil slick will harm us in ways we cannot yet predict. It will leave a very deep scar on our skin.”

KevinPowers.jpg

Kevin Powers, local professor, will talk about Inspiration, how it relates to the art making process, and tips on getting re-inspired.

Element151.jpg

Element 151 Films, a San Jose-based production company, will screen some of their music videos & share why they’re here instead of LA.

Performance by Khalilah Ramirez who will share her “Dance of Peace”. “The purpose of the Dance of Peace is to help foster peace in people’s hearts. It makes people smile. It makes dogs bark. It gets people talking to each other. It turns the conversation towards peace. It is fun and silly. It takes people’s minds away from their everyday worries,” says Kalilah Ramirez.
