HYRBRIDITY, MULTIPLICITY, HETREROGENEITY?

HYRBRIDITY, MULTIPLICITY, HETREROGENEITY?

Exhibit Opening Reception: Thursday, March 3, 5-8pm
Exhibit Dates: March 3 - March 31, 2011

A MULTI-MEDIA EXHIBIT OF BAY AREA ARTISTS OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN DESCENT
HYBRIDITY, MULTIPLICITY, HETEREOGENERITY fosters an interdisciplinary
dialogue on cultural fusion, tradition and identity within the San Francisco Bay Area’s
Southeast Asian American community.  The artists selected for this exhibition
use a myriad of media to convey their sense of self and their position within
American society.  The artists’ thematic materials vary as a result of the
diverse heritages they were raised in and the relationships and/or memories they
choose to work from.  Highlighting these selected works from a larger cultural
base, this exhibition is mounted in conjunction with San Francisco State University’s
third tri-annual interdisciplinary conference of Southeast Asians in the diaspora:
Re-SEAing Southeast Asian American Studies March 10 and 11.

3 MAVERICK Artists Paint Live at CINEQUEST

Kimy Martinez

Sean Sczepanik

Steven Sczepanik

Phantom Galleries is proud to partner again this year with the CINEQUEST Film Festival by providing artists Kimy Martinez, Sean Sczepanik and Steven Sczepanik for their MAVERICK ART live painting contest.

Cinequest Empowers Mavericks through the creation and discovery of cinematic art and innovation plus the connection of artists, innovators, movie lovers and students. A Maverick stands apart from the crowd, willing to create and innovate from a place of personal yet global vision. Daring to act as a catalyst of dynamic change in a cookie cutter world; the boundaries become endless when inspired by ingenious thinking. Thus, the Maverick spirit thrives within the world of art and innovation.

Kimy, Sean and Steven will all be on site, visible in the windows (on the pedestrian paseo side), of Camera 12 Cinemas beginning Wednesday, March 2nd and working throughout the festival until the Closing Gala on Saturday, March 12 where the artists will be acknowledged on stage at the California Theater in front of 1200 people.

Come by and say "hi" to these artists while you're cruising between films and vote for your favorite painting (there will be text voting - follow the instructions on the window signage.)

We'll of course be updating you with pics along the way on the Phantom Galleries blog and Flickr site.

KALEID Feature Exhibits Open First Friday March 4th

Join us for our Featured Exhibits by Dotti Cichon and Kathleen Wolf at KALEID for the month of March.

Dotti Cichon: The Grandeur of the Commonplace: Impressions of Europe two bodies of photographic work from a recent trip to Europe.

The Grandeur of the Commonplace explores the incredible beauty of ordinary places such as train stations, shopping malls, shops and stairways in panoramic photographs that exaggerate perspective by having forced the camera to do things it was not meant to do. Impressions of Europe, work done in Paris and Les Andelys in France is an homage to the impressionist painters who attempted to capture “impressions” and not just copy reality which is something that, by definition, is a challenge to emulate as a photographer.

Kathleen Wolf: Almost Edible

This exhibition is comprised of several approaches to food painting: the earliest works represent visual recipes, the second is comprised of viewing food from multiple viewpoints or having it disappear off over the horizon, creating a different type of visual movement. The third, and most recent work invites the viewer to participate in the purchase of food from places they are familar with, an Ice Cream Parlor, Bakery, Deli, etc.

Artists' Reception: Friday, March 4, 7-10pm

Veggielution Benefit Call For Art

Veggielution.jpg

Veggielution is seeking artists to donate pieces to our silent art auction fundraiser, Avant Garden, taking place on April 15th, 2011 at KALEID Gallery in Downtown San Jose. Click here for more event info.

The Artist- We are looking for pieces that are connected to food and/or farming in some way. In addition to a focus on Veggielution, we hope to explore many aspects of food – the land, people that work the land, farm worker rights, rural and urban settings, eating together creating community, food justice, food insecurity, childhood food memories, taste, and any other connections you can make. We hope to have art at a wide variety of price points, so that there is something for everyone. We are also looking for handcrafted items that can be for straight up sale (not auction). These items would follow the same compensation guidelines listed below.

The Event- We are building an interactive and engaging evening around tasty food and a silent art auction. The program will include farm fresh appetizers/small plates, beverages, music, and video. Veggielution’s mission and programs will be featured, and we hope to inspire farm and food related conversation. We expect to have 100-200 people in attendance.

Deadlines- We are planning a preview event on April 1st during South First Friday, and we would also like to post photos of some of the pieces online to help generate buzz for the event. The deadline for getting your finished piece to us is March 29th. Let us know ASAP if you are planning to submit a piece.

Compensation- We know that as an artist, you gotta eat. You can choose to keep 0% to 40% of the final sale price of your piece. The rest goes to support Veggielution. You set the minimum bid for your art. You also get yourself exposed to a bunch of people, and a warm fuzzy feeling inside from supporting a great non-profit.

What is Veggielution?- Veggielution is a nonprofit community farm seeking to create a sustainable food system in San Jose. We currently farm about 1 acre at Emma Prusch Park in East San Jose. Our volunteer workdays, youth programs, sliding scale Farm Stand, and free cooking and gardening workshops connect people with the land, make fresh produce affordable, and teach how and why to eat healthier. The food produced at the farm is made accessible to the surrounding community through giving produce to volunteers, sales at the low-cost farm stand, and donations to soup kitchens. Veggielution also offers free cooking and gardening workshops to teach people how to cook and eat in a healthy way. www.veggielution.org

South First Fridays Art Walk March 4th!

Join us for South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk Friday March 4, 7-11pm
(in downtown San Jose's SoFA District & beyond!)

Be sure to make it by these Phantom Galleries coordinated exhibitions hosted by local art supporting businesses:

FolieADeuxDelirious.jpg

Opening Reception: Folie à Deux: A Delusion Shared By Two an exhibition of monotype prints by Curt Schauer at Caffe Trieste.

In his Folie à Deux series (2009-2010), Curt explores the double sided nature of human behavior and psyche and how it can be internalized within a single individual or between two persons and even a society associated with one another. Even between the artist and the viewer. In the monotypes, the characteristic figurative images can be viewed as two individuals or as one with two distinct or shared personalities. The prints are characterized by broken color patterns creating motion, tension and anxiety within and between. In addition to the Folie a Deux prints, he displays similar and related monotypes created leading up to and during the series. Curt is influenced by artists including Picasso, Vigliaturo and Benzoni. He works in monotype, watercolor, glass and mixed media.

First Fridays are Opera Night! at Caffé Trieste with some of the Bay Area’s best opera singers performing your favorite arias and duets.

Shannon_GKMar.jpg

Artist’s Reception: Phosphene Series: Hand Painted Polaroid Emulsion Lifts by Shannon Amidon at Good Karma Cafe.

Phosphene is an entoptic phenomenon characterized by the experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. Flashes of light, often caused by rubbing the closed eyes. These images were created by hand painting blank 35mm slides. Polaroid pull-a-part prints were created using a vintage slide printer. The prints were boiled in water and the emulsion was carefully removed and placed onto watercolor paper. Each emulsion print is hand manipulated and one of a kind.

359Sacred%20Symbols.jpg

Artist’s Reception: Just In Time, Abstracts by Jane Peterman at Pho69.

The series of paintings is a meditation on time and space beginning March 2009 and ongoing.

Pho69 also features live contemporary music on First Fridays. Come check out local bands performing favorite covers and original music.

We have a special night of performances this Sunday, March 6th at the gallery featuring artist Chris Johanson's new band, Sun Foot.

Doors open at 7pm; Performances 7:30.
Admission: $5 (All ages welcome) RSVP here.

Pale Hoarse (Kyle Ranson & Kim Pierce)
http://www.myspace.com/palehoarse

Pale Hoarse is the musical project of San Francisco artist Kyle Ranson and friend Kim Pierce. The two create tortured harmonies and hauntingly beautiful melodies reminiscent of the late D.C. band Ida.

"The lyrics tend toward darkness, Christian corruption, bitter childhoods and love gone wrong—but always there is redemption. Imagined the shipwrecked lovechild of Karen Dalton and Nick Cave singing up from a watery grave, or Jesus and Mary hanging out at night, harmonizing under bright stars in the desert. Like any good ministry, Pale Hoarse has built a devoted following that is expanding gracefully, gleefully, with each show they play. This is music for lovers, for sinners, for makers and seers. It’s tortured and tainted, it’s gorgeous and glorious." ~ Kate Schatz

San Francesca (Harrison Russell & Star Quach)
http://sanfrancescamusic.com

"San Francesca (formerly Le Verita) is obviously influenced by the likes of post-punk bands like Joy Division, which it mixes together with elements of offbeat '80s synth-pop and straight guitar rock. What results though is definitely not dance music, nor do the drum machines and keyboards get treated as novelty. The music is serious, dark and carefully textured, with an understated intensity that builds gradually and slowly creeps underneath your skin. - Aaron Carnes, METRO

Christine Shields
http://www.myspace.com/christinephrisgneshields

"Shields is perhaps best known for her portraits of musicians, short-lived comic book Blue Hole and dark and humorous, Addams-meets-Gorey illustration work for countless small-press publications and zines. Her music, like her images, is dreamy, dark, melodic, harmonious, and high-lonesome. (That old-time influence has its hooks in her good.) If you want to make her day, compare her to Opal. You wouldnt be far off the mark." ~ Awesome Vistas.

VOTE for Kimy Martinez' Cinequest painting by texting KIMYM to 66937

What's the concept behind your painting for CINEQUEST "Experience 21"?
Two ideas I want to convey in my painting are being a Maverick and being the age 21. My painting is a narrative piece that tells of a 21 year old breaking away from the carousel of life that spins on the disco ball of earth. She is determined to find her own path and in doing so her horse sheds it's facade. She reaches for the star, a ticket that carries her through the 21st century. In the stone work are examples of things we might have done at age 21.

Did you enjoy the live painting experience at the festival?
I enjoyed the live painting at Cinequest. From my first greeting to the last, I felt lucky to have spoken with filmmakers and film lovers that stopped and appreciated a different creative medium. We shared are creative experiences, inspiring one another. I especially enjoyed working beside two very funny, kind and talented artists. It made coming in to paint really fun.

Is there a most memorable moment so far?
My most memorable moment is when a little girl, about 4 years old, came and chatted with me. She was inspired to tell me about what she liked to paint. She said she lived in two places and she got to paint in both.

Do you have anything coming up you'd like to let people know about?
I will have my first published drawings in a book called "Experienced: Rock Music Tales of Fact and Fiction". It will be released this month by Vagabondage Press.

Visit Kimy at these websites:
Kimy is art editor for online ezine called "LITnIMAGE" www.litnimage.com

VOTE for Sean Sczepanik's Cinequest painting by texting SEANS to 66937

What's the concept behind your painting for CINEQUEST "Experience 21"?
My piece, "Don't gamble it will eat your soul", speaks about the obsession of gambling, and a gambler being unable to escape from this sensory overloaded environment because he or she is mesmerized by the interior of a casino with its flashy lights, colorful carpets and slot machine noises.

Did you enjoy the live painting experience at the festival?
I enjoyed the festival very much. It gave me the opportunity to talk to people about my work and meet new people.

Is there a most memorable moment so far?
The most memorable moment was being part of this festival.

Do you have anything coming up you'd like to let people know about?
I have a solo show coming up. The date of my show is Friday April 1st, D-Structure 520 Haight Street, San Francisco, 8pm-12am.

Visit Sean's website: shoeboxproduction.net

VOTE for Steven Sczepanik's Cinequest painting by texting STEVES to 66937

What's the concept behind your painting for CINEQUEST "Experience 21"?
The concept behind my piece is out with the old and in with the new. My main subject is a man with his skin shedding from his face and hands, a transformation. The blue skin represents old dead skin deteriorating and underneath is his new white skin ready to be shown. The birds flying above the man symbolize the age 21 because there are simply 21 birds.

Did you enjoy the live painting experience at the festival?
I enjoyed the painting for Cinequest very much! It has been such a positive experience with several awesome people all over interested in what we have to show.

Is there a most memorable moment so far?
The whole experience will be memorable for me, but if I had to pick one it would be probably be one of the greeters at Camera 12 always having a different wardrobe everyday. Ranging from elaborate kimonos to shimmery suits, I was always wondering what he was going to wear next haha.

Do you have anything coming up you'd like to let people know about?
I would like everyone to be aware of Sean Sczepanik's upcoming solo show on April 1, 2011 titled Broken Gears. The exhibit will take place at D-Structure on Haight and Filmore in San Francisco. He is creating some crazy good work.

Succor In Honor of the Life and Art of Jessica Beerli

Opening Reception: Friday, April 1, 7-10pm, free & open to the public
part of the South FIRST FRIDAYS monthly art walk
http://www.southfirstfridays.com

Friends and Family Memorial: Saturday, April 2, 5-7pm
Friends and family are invited to view Jessica's art and celebrate her life in the company of others that knew her.
Please RSVP by email to Erin Taylor emargarettaylor@gmail.com or Facebook page: http://on.fb.me/JessicaMemorial

Jessica Beerli (1974-2011), a talented young artist who died in a tragic accident, left behind a provoking body of work that shows the potential of a truly talented young woman pursing her art.

Some of that work has been displayed here in a show that is as much a work in progress as the artist was herself. In addition to the finished work, some of the paintings on display are clearly early drafts, experiments in color and style that were leading Jessica toward her own distinct perspective. As she worked, she learned and this show is an unusual opportunity to see the progression of art while glimpsing its final form. Jessica planned to showcase her paintings at KALEID Gallery in February 2011. To honor her life, this comprehensive show has been organized by family, friends and the gallery.

"The purpose is not to sadden or shock you, but more to call attention to those who have little in their lives to smile about, and to make us realize how fortunate we are in spite of our daily struggles."

"Through these portraits I am attempting to create a space in the viewer and myself where a discussion for the potentiality of peace may take shape, root and thrive. A dialogue made possible by the universally powerful, ancient and deeply symbolic language, of painting." ~ Jessica Beerli
