A Box Is A Box Is A Box by Gianfranco Paolozzi

In search of new surfaces to apply my marks, to write my journals, the everyday boxes used as packaging for products that we consume, are becoming my canvasses. the box is a canvas when it is disassembled or not.

Paulson_KALEID.jpg

Photographs from Italy and Greece by John Eric Paulson

Each day I wonder what photographic surprises await me. When I focus on an area, I look for what I would like to see if it were a perfect world, creating the ideal, capturing the basic beauty and enhancing its drama.

Amidon_Phantom.jpg

Kanji Garden by Shannon Amidon
Phantom Galleries 95 South Market St.

Kanji Garden was created using hundreds of cut, hand dyed, and folded books that were destined for a landfill. The reused books that received a new life were titled “Understanding Kanji Characters” by Ping-gam Go.

Izer_GoodKarma.jpg

Milk and Bones new paintings by Izer the Mizer
Good Karma Vegan Café, 37 South First St.

An amalgamation of images from children’s book illustrations and horror films, the teachings of Rush Limbaugh and Friedrich Nietzsche, a humanity that Gandhi would have eaten for, the end of the world, the birth of a child, the death of your mother, true love, true fate, true hate, true blood, a three headed hound with no legs, a drunk on a roll.

Carter needs your NUMBERS!

As most of you Don't know just yet, I recently won a bid to build a giant countdown clock for the Hackers and Founders "Nerd New Year" event happening on 11.11.11 .

http://nerdnewyear.com/
and
https://www.wepay.com/donate/162065
and
http://www.hackersandfounders.com/events/36828002/

The physical build actually went down ahead of schedule! and the software is right on track, but I need help from my fellow artist to make this thing go from "Cool" to "BAD ASS!"

The Clock: ~14' tall, steel framing holding a series of 6 x 23" monitors in the air. Said monitors are arranged along the front in vertical format and each display a single digit of a clock.
As the clock ticks down to 11:11:11pm on 11/11/11 each number will be represented by a different photo - chosen at random - from a collection of that number. Also, there Might be flame throwers on top!

Something like this:

The problem:
The largest part of the software is grabbing a random copy of whatever digit, and updating the display. While I Could go through and have it pick from Flickr, a number of artist and photographers have limited their usage of images in a way that makes it a lot harder to find morally clean numbers, and I would hate to step on someone's toes over fair use and drm. Manually sorting through photos online to find out if the the largest formatted ones is fairly attainable in time for 11.11.11 is Tedious at best.

How you can help:
Email me your photos of Numbers!
If you make it yourself or otherwise find some in the wild, I don't care, but I need lots of them!

I do have some request about this though...

Guidelines:
*"Physical" numbers. I really like the idea of presenting large amounts of information in this digital format, but enjoy the disparity of looking at digital photos of physical things. I know several of you are AWESOME at design work, but numbers found in "Meat Space" is the main objective.

*Single Whole Number Digits 0 - 9 only. You found an awesome 13 out there, but I won't have a way of displaying that correctly, so why not submit a 1 and a 3 photo separately??? And I know I'll be asking for trouble, but V for 5 and I for 1 Would for the most part work, so be creative! Save the shot of Pi for another project however ;)

*Vertical formatting. 9:16 would be best, but any of the wider formats shot in vertical/portrait format would be best.

*"Hi Res" 1080h x 1920v would be perfect, but they need to just look good blown up full screen.

*.jpg format to keep the size down and make it easier on me for coding purposes.

*I would love large collections Zipped up, but individual shots email would be fine.

*Labeling the names of your submissions into a "#_AAA_##.jpg" format would be SUPER helpfull, with the first # being the digit in the photo, then your initials, then a number separating your shots if you have more than one of that digit to submit.

Email me directly at GCStokum@gmail.com

Whew. Now I'm going to get back to programming, but if any of you could help the clock look awesome, I will be eternally grateful.

G. Carter Stokum

Walls of Fame at Empire Seven Studios

"Walls of Fame" Saturday November 19th, 7-11pm

Empire Seven invites you to a new exhibit featuring a great line up of San Jose's old school Graffiti writers native to this city. During Force 129's younger and most recent years he's always admired people like King 157, the man created the first top to bottom holy roller(s) and Poesia, hitting up the Legendary Taylor walls where storage units live strong today.

We have noticed Force 129 in some recent shows such as The Usuals with the PARKBENCH art collective and at Gallery 10. During the show at the Usuals, Force 129 exhibited with one of his idols Mesengr. Force 129 seized the opportunity to ask Mesengr if he would be part of what he calls his dream show. With such a great line up and idea behind it, E7S couldn't pass up the opportunity to bring this show to San Jose.

Force 129, King 157, Mesengr and Poesia has converted Empire Seven Studios into a street scene most people and writers can relate in one way or another. You don't know if you're indoors or out.

Growing up in San Jose 80's and 90's, the graffiti scene was nonstop, in full force and many know these veterans paid their dues. Poesia has been painting murals all over the world consistantly as well as Mesengr throughout the country. King 157 has been up and down Cali and as far as Mexico for years now.

The life insists you do it daily and they don't slow down even though life changes with work and family.

Please bring a can or two to donate as we're supporting the Second Harvest Food Bank. SHFB provides food to people in need in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Make a difference in your community.
