Katrina Loera Exhibition at Good Karma Cafe

Phantom Galleries presents artist Katrina Marie Loera's debut solo exhibition Blessed Are the Beasts, For They Shall Inherit the Earth at Good Karma Vegan Cafe.

Animals have inhabited this planet since its creation. They have sustained the human race by providing food, clothing, protection, strength, guidance, entertainment, and companionship since the beginning of our existence. They have remained constant as the world and its people have changed and put chains around them. Their servitude has not gone unnoticed. For all around the world, these beasts have been exalted for their offerings. To some, they are sacred. Yet, despite their efforts to coexist, there are those who treat these humble beasts with hostility. Perhaps it is our nature as humans. We bring war and destruction to a planet that otherwise would be filled with abundant life and beauty. We have created divisions amongst our own species and shed blood because of beliefs. We have neglected and abused all living things in our quest for domination. Eventually, we will be our own demise. And all of earth shall be left to the meek.

Blessed Are the Beasts, For They Shall Inherit the Earth is a collection of images honoring the animals and people of this planet for their sacrifice, patience, long-suffering, beauty, and grace.

New works by Lacey Bryant at Modern Eden, San Francisco

KALEID Gallery's Lacey Bryant will have a featured solo exhibition at Modern Eden Gallery January 21-February 5, 2012.

“Soliloquies from the Silent Country”, new paintings and sculptures by San Jose artist Lacey Bryant. The opening reception will be held at Modern Eden on Saturday, January 21st from 6-9pm. Live music will be provided by acclaimed Folk group “The Wild Reeds” [http://www.myspace.com/thewildreeds], and complimentary drinks by Quail Oak Winery will be served to our 21+ guests. The exhibition will be on display through February 5, 2012 and is free and open to the public.

Theatrically posed and surrounded by lush, illusory environments, the subjects of Lacey's works are like illustrations in a picture book written in an unknown language. The images are somewhat familiar but certain elements remains foreign. Like a hazy dream of an imagined childhood long forgotten, the images strive to make you feel as if you just might have been there once, maybe. The stage is set in an imagined world of natural beauty beneath ominously stormy skies. It is a world poised between now and once upon a time.

The use of symbolism gives the work a universal language although many of the symbols can be interpreted in several different ways. Certain motifs are repeated throughout the works such as birds and insects, roots, branches or veins, string, theatre curtains and abandoned objects. Often emitting from the haunting subjects of her work, these symbols represent desires, feelings and afflictions. Lacey’s subjects are often blind to their own dilemmas or at least are unaware of how to change their circumstances. Curtains remind us that we are peering in on a world as artificial as our own. These images are invented to confront issues such as connection, longing, frailty, time and our own mortality.

As is common in Lacey's work, there is a subtle tension between beautiful and unsettling elements. Though the settings are usually very light and airy there is a certain heaviness in the atmosphere and a distinct melancholy about the girls with wild hair and confrontational stares. We are presented with things we are uncomfortable with-spiders, holes, cracks and decay. This contrast is constructed to create a sense of mystery and mood, enticing the viewer to linger and embrace their own hidden dark sides or even to find the beauty in something that scares us.

People-Shaped Animals Exhibit at KALEID Gallery

art work by Nicole Dornsife

People-Shaped Animals

Concurrent with the annual Further Confusion convention in downtown San Jose, KALEID Gallery hosts a collection of work from artists participating in the furry subculture coordinated by Brian Root.

The furry crowd's roots are in indie comics and scifi/fantasy illustration, with a huge volume of art produced that's rarely seen outside of the convention's doors.

The central theme of the show is anthropomorphism in animal illustration - whether that's in cartooning, folklore, wildlife illustration, or fantasy art, the unifying thread is that all of the contributors to this show find something in making pictures of animals that speaks to them.

Montalvo's Historic Villa Celebrates a Century

In 2012, the Villa at Montalvo Arts Center turns 100 years old! Built by Senator James D. Phelan, California's first democratically elected Senator, his beloved estate in Saratoga has evolved into one of the Bay Area's leading arts institutions and artist residency programs. It was at Montalvo where Phelan entertained artists, politicians, soldiers, scholars, and cultural figures until his death in 1930, at which time he bequeathed the estate to the state of California with a very specific mandate:

"I would like the property at Saratoga, California...to be maintained as a public park open under reasonable restrictions, the buildings and grounds immediately surrounding the same to be used as far as possible for the development of art, literature, music, and architecture by promising students."

Montalvo has kept Senator Phelan's legacy alive for all these years through the hard work and dedication of countless people who have supported the institution and the artists it serves with their time, creativity, and financial resources, all in recognition of the deep importance of the arts and nature in our everyday lives.

Join us throughout the year as we celebrate the history and future of Montalvo through these extraordinary events!

Leslie Lambert Exhibit at City Lights Theatre Co.

Works on Paper, 18 figurative drawings by local artist Leslie Lambert, is featured in the gallery at City Lights Theatre Company during the production of Aphrodisiac by Rob Handel.

Using simple tools like a hand-sharpened twig, a few bottles of ink, a brush and a spray bottle, the artist responds with a bold, yet delicate touch to the exquisite geometry of the living figure. A sense of mystery and intrigue reins supreme as abstraction and expressive realism combine in tiny, potent images.

City Lights Theatre Company
529 South 2nd St, San Jose, CA.

Aphrodisiac runs from January 19 to February 19, 2012.

Soliloquies from the Silent Country

Congratulations to Lacey Bryant on her current exhibit Soliloquies from the Silent Country at Modern Eden Gallery in San Francisco. The opening was well attended by her fans of San Jose. Many of the subjects on the walls were there, as beautiful in real life as Lacey's depiction of them in her paintings.

The Wild Reeds performed two sets...the trio in perfect harmony with each other as well as the ambiance of the setting.

Soliloquies from the Silent Country is on view through February 5, 2012.
