The snake has been celebrated and revered for many millennia in numerous world cultures. Through its slender, smooth exterior it hides many myths and secrets within its appendage-less body. Its fangs bring agonizing death to the naïve, but by shedding its skin it is reborn again and again. Dragons, guardians, demigods, demons… they represent many things to many people. Cukui is proud to present our first show of the New Year. The Year of The Snake, as the lunar calendar dictates, falls upon us this cycle. A collection of fine artists will assemble together to interpret their own notions on what significance the snake plays in their lives. Please come out and enjoy a night of visual and audio stimulation as we come celebrate in community and in creativity.

Phantom Galleries is proud to be partnering with Cinequest again this year for their Cinequest 23 Film Festival! This is the 4th year that PG & CQ has worked together to bring this live painting event to the amazing audiences of this maverick film festival.
This year's artists are: André Hart, Melanie Sharr and Jeff Hemming. All three artists are highly imaginative in their concepts and excellent in their painting practice. We look forward to their interpretations of the festival's theme "UNLEASH."
Festival attendees will have the ability to observe each artist put their talent to work and thereafter vote for their favorite artist via Facebook. All sponsors, artists and paintings will be presented at the closing ceremony before announcing the winner of the "Live Art Contest!"
Stop by often to see our artists' progress. Artists will be on view in the Camera Cinemas 12 windows along the Paseo de San Antonio walk between S. 1st and S. 2nd streets during the festival February 26–March 29, 2013.

KALEID Gallery has begun new feature interviews with their artists on their website beginning this month, February 2013. As you may know, each month their main entry wall features two solo exhibitions by chosen resident artists there. Artists' receptions are held during the South FIRST FRIDAYS Art Walk on the first Friday of the month.
Kicking off this new feature are interviews with Melanie Sharr, and Jeff Hemming. Both artists are incredibly talented painters, each is from very different backgrounds and draw from different influences creating unique narratives with excellent techniques.
READ the interviews here, and then visit Sharr and Hemming's solo exhibitions. Both are on view through this week ending Friday February 22nd.

We are emerging from our recording bubble to perform our first show of the year, because we're rusty like a water-damaged ukelin, but also because Nick Jaina is finally coming through town. Though you may be unfamiliar with his music as he comes to the bay but once in a blue moon, Nick is one of the premier songwriters in Portland, OR. His storytelling is immaculate and his music is beautiful, and we use no hyperbole when we say that he is one of the best musicians on the solar system, perhaps even outer space. He has released five albums on Hush Records and has, among many other things, composed three ballets with the Satellite Ballet and Collective, featuring dancers from the New York City Ballet. He will be joined on this tour by local string players Danah Olivetree (Fox & Woman, etc) and Dorota Szuta (Matador), who are, in our opinion, simply the best there is.
This show is headlined by our dear friend and San Jose legend-in-his-own-time Will Sprott. We personally gah-ron-tee that Mr. Sprott will blow our socks right through our shoes or your money back. ~Corpus Callosum
This is an excellent play we think you'll all relate to and enjoy! Thanks to the San Jose Stage Company for the discounted tickets being offered to our Phantom Galleries arts community!
“I'm not an abstractionist. I'm not interested in the relationship of color or form or anything else. I'm interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.” ~Mark Rothko

Full-blooded and visceral, and winner of six 2010 Tony Awards including Best Play, Red by John Logan takes you into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko.
After landing the biggest commission in the history of modern art, Mark Rothko begins work on a series of large murals with the help of a new young assistant. Set amid the swiftly changing cultural tide of the early 1960s, celebrated bad boy of the art world for whom paintings are "pulsating" life forces and art is intended to stop the heart. The Stage's venue will serve as the ultimate environment for the up close and personal portrait of an artist's ambition and vulnerability. Red is a startling snapshot of a brilliant artist at the height of his fame, a play hailed as "intense and exciting" by The New York Times.
