2 from the Ark is an exhibit of paintings by Eileen Graham & (current KALEID artist) Lucy Liew
The Art Ark is the consummate example of the city of San Jose’s effort to support the art community. This October marks the first anniversary for the Art Ark, an affordable housing project in Martha Gardens. The Art Ark is within walking distance of the SJSU Foundry and near San Jose’s SoFA district. Liew and Graham both live and work at the Art Ark. This exhibit is the product of their working together and informing each other’s creative process.

Lucy Liew - Born in Malaysia, of Chinese-Melanau descent, Liew is a graduate of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in Singapore and a Commonwealth Foundation Fellowship winner from England. Liew has been active in the Bay Area since 1997 and was awarded a San Jose City Branch Library Project in 2004. Her work has been featured internationally in numerous solo and group exhibitions, as well as in various private and corporate collections around the world. Liew’s work is also in the permanent collection of the National Art Gallery in Malaysia. Liew’s works have been described as a “rich tapestry of color”, a reference to her multi-layered style and use of curvilinear forms and colors. Liew strives to capture a mixture of playfulness and mystery from her native culture that offers the viewer several levels of interpretation. Over the years her subject matter has dealt with a variety of forms, from abstract to figurative, but the heart of Liew’s work is the celebration of Creation and the human experience.
Eileen Graham-Graham paints with oils on canvas, focusing on the figure and portraiture. The human figure inspires her because of the wealth of narratives available in any one expression or gesture. Graham earned her BFA at the University of Akron’s Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. Although she does commissioned artwork in pastel, charcoal and acrylic, Graham’s focus is on her first love, oil painting. John Singer Sargent, the Impressionists, John Koche, the Ashcan School, and the teachings and artwork of Robert Henri inspire Graham. Her contemporaries have noted the influence of Edward Manet, Edward Hopper and Lucian Freud.
