Do you like to talk with people? Are you interested in art and life? Do you like to explore?
From March 28th to May 17th, 2008, the San Jose ICA will present This Show Needs You, a participatory group exhibition. Michael Smit, one of the artists in this show, is looking for volunteers for his dialogue project: How have you been an artist today?
As a volunteer you will actively participate in and contribute to this exciting project by talking with visitors at the ICA, as well as with people in the public space in San Jose. Your name will appear in project credits.
These conversations will investigate the possibility of an overlap between art and daily life.
Michael Smit suggests that art is the creation of something new and meaningful coming out of the conversation between ourselves and the world around us. This opens up the possibility that art is not limited to just the professional artists or traditional artistic media.
Is it possible to say that we all create new things all the time? And if so, are there some things in our daily life, that stand out so much that we can consider them our art?
- You will get a training.
- We expect availability for at least 4 hours on one day and participation for more than one day is encouraged.
- The project's conversations will take place both in public spaces as well as in the ICA Gallery. Be prepared and able to work independently although collaboration with the artist and other volunteers will also happen.
- These conversations may or may not be audio-recorded. We have limited recording equipment. If you can bring your own audio-recorder for recording your conversations, that would be great, but not required. These recordings will be archived and processed later.
- You will report your findings in a log book.
- Your contribution will be credited.
– Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.
Please respond asap by sending your info (name, email, telephone, language, and rough availability) to the artist at msmit@mac.com or call (415) 867-7945.
First meeting: Thursday Feb 28, 6:30-7:30 pm, at the Institute of Contemporary Art, 560 S. First St in San Jose.
