THE STATE OF THINGS is a multi-media installation by Chelsea Lynn Jennings that deals with the sociological idea of the "McDonaldization" of society.
McDonaldization is a theory by George Ritzer that expands upon Max Weber's thoughts on bureaucratization and rationality. In essence, the theory explains how more and more sectors of society are becoming "rationalized," or more and more like bureaucracies. Businesses do this in order to become more efficient, calculable, productive, and controlled, and it is indeed very rational from the business owner's perspective. However the increased rationalization of society leads to a very uniform world, in which both employees and consumers alike are dehumanized. This rationalization and resulting dehumanization is what "The State of Things" is addressing.
